Celebrating Stanford 26 October 2024

The musical world is marking this year the 100th anniversary of the death of

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)   The city and University of Cambridge

has special cause to mark the occasion as he was Organist of Trinity College,

Professor of Music and Director of the University Music Society.

We here at OLEM have a particular reason to observe this anniversary as Stanford

not only designed our fine pipe organ but gave the opening recital in 1890.  He didn't

have far to come as he lived just across the road from the church in Harvey Road.

On Saturday 26th October 2024, the Royal College of Organists, Trinity College and

OLEM will be hosting an day of talks and recitals to celebrate the musical legacy of

Stanford.   Here at OLEM, Professor Anthony Gritten from London's Royal Academy

of Music will perform an organ recital of works by Stanford at 3pm.  The day will

conclude with a Solemn Mass at 6pm sung the by Choir of Our Lady and the English

Martyrs which will include Stanford's Mass in Bb, two of his motets and organ music.
