Today is Lent Fast Day – a day of abstinence, prayer and giving.
Pope Francis says: “Fasting makes sense if it really chips away at our security and, as a consequence, benefits someone else, if it helps us cultivate the style of the good Samaritan, who bent down to his brother in need and took care of him.”
This year, CAFOD are sharing their work with the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, in Zambia. When Sister Yvonne visited us in East Anglia she told us about Florence, a woman who was found sick, vulnerable and in distress.
CAFOD’s partners nursed her back to health and then asked her, “What would you like to do?” She replied, “I would like to be a fisherwoman”.
In a landlocked country, this wasn’t going to be easy, but with 500 tiny fish, tools to dig a large pond and training to farm the fish, Florence became a fisherwoman.
She was able then to repay the generosity of her neighbours who had helped her, by teaching them also how to become fish farmers. And she can support her family.
Please give generously to CAFOD, using the gift envelopes or by donating online.
This evening (Friday 10 March, 19:30) our Stations of the Cross share Jesus’ final steps toward Good Friday, and also reflect on the experiences of those who fall and thirst.
CAFOD are leading this liturgy of Stations of the Cross, the reflections of which give us a contemporary echo of the pain and suffering experienced by people around the world, giving us a fresh perspective through which to remember Jesus’ suffering for us.
Today – Friday 10 March – is Lent Fast Day, when we go without so others don’t have to. And the money we save, and our donations, go to help CAFOD with their work.
In Bolivia, when harvests are gathered, communities come together to share a meal. But for many, the rejoicing is short-lived. For 32-year-old Nicanora, when her harvest runs out, all that is left is a ground barley broth. This Harvest Fast Day, find out how you can make a difference.

Thank you very much for your generous donation to our collection for the good work done by CAFOD this Lent Fast Day, raising £3,238.
Your prayers and financial contributions will go a long way to helping communities in Africa gain access to clean, fresh water. Proscovia’s life was transformed when CAFOD’s partner mended her local water pump, as this short report shows:
CAFOD works with partners across the world, wherever the need is greatest, so you can be sure that any donation you give makes a real difference to people living in poverty.

THIS LENT FAST DAY: We can help girls living in the world’s poorest countries get an education. Girls used to spend hours collecting water every day, but with CAFOD’s help bringing water to their homes, they now have time for school, studying and playing with their friends.
Could you spare a few minutes at the beginning and end of Mass over the next two weeks, handing out gift envelopes – so we can help many more women and girls? Please choose a time when you would help with our appeal. Thank you.
