To preserve and enhance the musical tradition of parish, we have created the Choral and Organ Music Trust. Through giving financial support for the Trust, you have a wonderful opportunity to be part of the music and liturgy of the Church in this place.
Since the Church’s foundation, music has formed an important part in its liturgies. Its lasting role has been a spiritual inspiration, an integral part of the Church’s solemn feasts and celebrations. In the words of Vatican II:
“There should be choirs, or scholae cantorum, especially in cathedrals and other major churches…and they should be carefully encouraged.”
The Trust exists to:
- Support the clergy and Director of Music in the provision of choral and organ music in the liturgies.
- Fund choral and organ scholarships in the parish.
- Reinforce the continuity of our musical tradition:
- In particular we aim to fund eight Lay Clerks for the 10:45 and 18:15 choirs;
- and support the establishment of the Junior Choir.
The scope of the music provided for our liturgies extends from the Gregorian Chant of over 1,000 years to commissions from contemporary composers such as Colin Mawby.
In many ways, our parish is unique among the Catholic parishes of the United Kingdom, however the expertise we are able to draw on would founder without the active goodwill and backing of our congregations and clergy.
The high standard of the choirs is dependent entirely on volunteers who give freely of their time and expertise. While their commitment is unstinting, with the best will in the world there are times when the choirs’ resources are overstretched.
Through paying our choral scholars a stipend we would be able to plan and deliver choral music of the highest possible standard on a continuous basis, week-in-and- week-out, as well as enriching our worship and liturgy at the Church’s great festivals.
